Cub Scouts Pack 20 & Boys Scouts Troop 63
The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young men to build character through activities that promote leadership, responsibility, self-confidence, ethics, outdoor skills, personal fitness, citizenship and fun. The BSA believes that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society. Closter provides opportunities for all boys to get involved starting at age 6 (1 st grade) through age 18.
Cub Scout Pack 20 serves boys from first through fifth grade. Boys can join at any time, but the main recruiting periods are in September and January. Cub Scouts are separated into Dens (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos) as they progress through the program. All of the Dens make up the Cub Scout Pack. Scouts work on achievements within their ranks and participate in Den activities and Pack activities. These include hiking, sports, crafts, community service, camping, skits and assorted other activities. They learn about the community in which they live and, as they advance, take on leadership responsibilities.
Boy Scout Troop 63 continues after Cub Scouts and serves boys beginning with 6 th grade. Troop advancement is more rigorous than the Cub Scouts and activities are more high adventure. Whereas the Cub Scout Pack is run by the parent leaders, the Boy Scout Troop is run primarily by the Scouts themselves. The Boy Scouts have their own Cabin located at the Closter Nature Center. Group and individual activities help Scouts advance through the Boy Scout ranks and earn Merit Badges. Scouts who continue through the program earn the rank Eagle Scout - the highest rank in scouting.
Both programs offer summer camp opportunities – day camp and sleepover – during which the Scouts have the opportunity to complete the requirements for rank advancement and merit badges.
Troop 63 will celebrate their 100 th anniversary in 2017 and over the past century has advanced over 70 Scouts to the rank of Eagle and provided numerous improvement projects that have beautified our community.
