When to Obtain A Pet License
New Pet: Licensing of new pets is done throughout the year.
Dogs 7 months of age or older and cats over 4 months of age must be licensed.
Renewal: Dog licenses - During the month of January due by January 31
Cat licenses - During the month of July due by July 31
How to Obtain A Pet License
Online: Through our SDL Portal: Visit sdl.town/Closter
Create an account to renew an existing pet license or to register a new pet online. Once your application has been reviewed by the Health Department office an invoice will be sent to you. You may pay online via credit card or e-check. Convenience fees of $3.00 for credit card transactions and $1.50 for e-check payments apply. The license and official metal registration tags will be mailed to the pet owner upon payment.

- Fill out required information
- Enter Borough of Closter as your primary town
- Click the activation link in the email sent to the address you provided
2. Registering Your Pet
A. Visit sdl.town/Closter and select Pet License Registration
B. Complete required location, pet and vet information
C. Upload a copy of the Rabies Vaccination Certificate or exemption
D. Submit your request
E. The Borough Clerk's office will review request and email invoice with a request for payment
By Mail: Click here to obtain a pet licensing application.
Complete the application and submit by mail to Borough of Closter, Attn: Pet Licensing, 295 Closter Dock Road, Closter NJ 07624 with required documentation. Please do not mail DOG license renewals prior to March 1 or CAT license renewals prior to July 1. Enclose a check with applicable fees payable to Borough of Closter. The license and official metal registration tags will be mailed to the pet owner upon payment.
In Person: Visit the Health Department Office at Borough Hall
Bring your application, required documents, and check or credit card to the Health Department’s Office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday and 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Tuesday - Friday. The license and official metal registration tags will be given to the pet owner upon payment. Please note that cash is not accepted .
Required Documentation
- Proof of rabies vaccination. The State Department of Health requires that the rabies certificate be good at least 10 of the 12 months of the current licensing period.
- Dogs: Rabies certificates cannot expire before October 1, 2023
- Cats: Rabies certificates cannot expire before Mach 1, 2024
- For pets certified exempt from rabies vaccination as provided by regulations of the State Department of Health, a Certification of Exemption from Rabies Vaccination Form must be completed by a veterinarian and submitted with the application for a license.
